Local Decision Making

Cohesion of a community is realised in a place of promise, trust, and action. Following is a message from our Principal Director who invites a community discussion around the space between wanting, waiting, and doing.

For many years, the Millaa Millaa community has been working to build genuine partnerships with government, public, and private entities, aiming to create strategies that honour our rich cultural and pioneering heritage and attract sustainable investment for the growth of our township. Despite these efforts, there is a sense that our voices are not always fully acknowledged, and that priorities sometimes fail to reflect the true needs and views of our community.

The voices of Millaa Millaa deserve to be heard and respected, not discarded and replaced by decisions to “give them something to get them off our backs”.

We seek sincere engagement, meaningful consultations, and actions that address the priorities we’ve expressed as a community. It’s important for us to be present at the decision-making table – not as an afterthought, but as genuine stakeholders in shaping the future of our town.

As a united community, we are committed to working with all partners to ensure our history, needs, and aspirations are central to any future development plans. Let us move forward together, advocating for respect, accountability, and true collaboration in the decisions that impact Millaa Millaa’s future.

The Millaa Millaa Development Group (or “MMDG”) has been established to stand for the voice of Millaa Millaa.  Our approach is underpinned by a clear purpose and a set of core values and principles.

Purpose

The MMDG aims to achieve better outcomes for the Millaa Millaa community including:

  • Community members know who is coming to their community from NTG, when and for what purpose; and have time to prepare for engagement before meetings are held.
  • Engagement meetings are relevant and effective for the community member(s) and NTG.
  • Trust exists between community members and NTG.
  • Community members are informed about the outcomes of engagement meetings – ‘closing the loop’.
  • Engagement is culturally appropriate, including the use of interpreters where English is not the first language.
Actionable Items
1. Reframe the model for community consultations
